Evaluation for Sound Clip

We created a sound clip using Foley sounds.
We used images to help stimulate and focus the audience attention to the sound,
I feel like it made the experience more dramatic and used the other senses to
understand the story behind the clip.
We used different effects such as panning the sound from the back to the front
to make it sound like the voice is getting closer. We used fades in and out to make the
sound more sharp because we wanted to scary the audience.
We used other sound effects such as thunder/rain to show more atmosphere and
for the audience to know where we are that there's been a change in location. we used a moaning sound from a intro of a song which makes the sound clip feel more scary but also makes you
feel uncomfortable.
We used a M&M to make the sound of the biting into flesh because it is a crisp sound
and its very quick. we used the sound of pineapple being chewed to show sucking of blood.
I would improve this sound clip by making the chewing part longer as it doesn't have much
of an impact when it is short.

My Synopsis & My Use Of Iconography In Opening Sequence

Synopsis:

Once notorious vampire Sebastian Tussaud is awakened from his long sleep (he is the creator of all vampires) and has the thirst of blood once more. He moves into a town and people begin to go missing. Dan is in love with Steph and when she goes missing he investigates.

Iconography in opening sequence:

In my opening sequence I want to have opening titles for about a minute and with that minute I will show sequence of things related to vampires such as a cross with blood dripping down from it, people confession to sins booth, the moon, stained glass with the image of Jesus and Mary, books about vampires, sliver, mirror (no reflection), people being healed, toy burning up into flames, dark roads, red lipstick, someone soul being taken, venom turning them into vampire, image of bela Lugosi, sunlight through curtain, stake & garlic, someone being invited in, holy water that turns red. I will also show the sexual aspect of being a vampire which would be a seduction – kissing that turns to biting (cut just before it happens).

Then when we actually begin the scene we see a girl drinking at a bar –she’s wearing quiet tight fitting clothes and she’s wearing a cross necklace, she then gets given a drink from the bartender and says it’s from the guy in the corner, we then see the corner its dark, the takes the drink and walks over to the guy and finishes the drink and says thanks and leaves. We see her walk in the dark through a alleyway, she hears a branch being stepped on and looks behind her and no one is behind, she turns around and the guy from the bar (Sebastian) is in front of her

Anna: “jesus, you scared. Look I said thanks for the drink”

Sebastian: “I’m sorry about that, you see I’m very thirsty”

Anna: Suspiciously “well there’s a shop 10 minutes from here”

Sebastian: “no you see I like something more (fangs come out and eyes turn completely black) fresh”

Girl begins to run back not looking in front when she does look in front Sebastian’s there. He goes into bit her (we see the shadow) she screams and he enjoys it. He grows tired of her screams so he pulls her heart out and throws it and continues to drain her after he’s done he leaves.

How Does Triple X establish Xander as a rebellious hero?

How Does Triple X establish Xander as a rebellious hero?

The film triple x establishes Xander as a rebellious hero through the use of many camera techniques such as the type of shots they use e.g. Extreme close up (ECU) on his tattoos and on the side of his face. The use of these shots make us question the type of character he is, when we see tattoos we think rebel or a person who causes trouble, also the use of extreme close ups not only on Xander but on the car such as the “skateboarding is a crime” gives us the sense of what kind of man Xander is dealing with, the use of ECU keeps the audience guessing (because we don’t really see his face) and also the fact that each ECU aren’t that long gives it the sense of speed and adrenaline.

Also the use of music/soundtrack helps us get the feeling of a trouble making hero because it is quiet rocky and heavy metal like, it is fast paced – symbolise the fast life, constantly on the run and in for the thrill, the music makes the scene tense and fun. E.g. the break in the music at (1min 08 sec) was used as a transition into the next scene but also gave us as the viewer the sense of anticipation, the use of music/soundtrack emphasis the scene but also helps us categorise zander.

The dolling technique was also used in this scene (0.46 – 0.51 sec). The use of dolling in this scene helps to emphasis the frustration and anger of the character but also symbolises his importance as the camera focuses on him as he speaks. The use of dolling makes us as a viewer judge the character we see, if we are happy that this has happened to them or not.

In this scene the use of aural sound helps build tension and puts us on the edge of our seats as sound is used in many ways in this scene, through the soundtrack (non diegetic) – very fast paced music to get us as the viewer excited and not bored, the ambient noises around (deigetic) - which make it feel more realistic, dialogue (diegetic) – e.g. the part where they are fixing the car up the sound of their voices fade out which gives it the sense of mystery but it’s a break from all the madness and the sound FX used. There was one mistake I can point out about the Sound FX, the part where Xander is talking directly to the cameras around him we hear the sound of police sirens but actually there are none in the background 1 min 58 – 2 min. the use of the sound makes us feel like he’s going to be caught any second and the fact that the duration of the shots are so quick that we don’t actually realise, but this proves that sound can play a great deal of importance to the visuals.

Representation:
The use of representation is seen a lot in this scene. The use of colour is used to symbolise something about the character e.g. the colour red (the car) is used to suggest danger or power which links back to the Xander and Senator Dick Hotchkiss. Also the female character accompanying Senator Dick Hotchkissis wearing red which could suggest seductive lustful impure person. The uses of colours are signifiers and suggest something about the character because each color has a different meaning yellow could mean happy, blue could mean mellow.

The panning shot of the police symbolizes laziness. The shot of the police symbolizes that they are useless can’t get a job done and let the person get away, the shown in this way to make Xander look more of a dominant character compared to the police. Xander is shown as more of a hero because he is 1 person and he got the job he set out to do done but on the other hand the police didn’t – this could also link the binary opposites (levi strauss).

The music in the scene represents violence and anger. The music helps represent not only the emotion of the scene/shots but also the type of character or the personality of Xander. The music violence can link to Xander swearing, a fast paced person, no fear and etc.

Narrative

Binary opposition is used in this scene. The use of Levi Strauss binary opposition is used to show the character types e.g. the senator is high status because of what he is wearing and the way he speaks and Xander is low status because of how he is dressed and his tattoos and good vs. evil as Xander is the good character trying to show the evil character they have done wrong. The use of binary opposition makes us as the viewer think of Xander as a rebellious/good person.

Todorov’s theory of equilibrium is used. The equilibrium theory is used to show the type of character Xander is, he creates a disequilibrium and then resolves it which symbolises that he’s is a bit like an outlaw but does it for good reason.

Also Propps character types are used. Xander is represented as a hero but also a villain because he cause trouble but he then resolves the situation (Robin Hood like). We understand more about Xander through Propps character type because we see him as 2 people and categorise him.

To conclude the film triple X uses different techniques which make us as the viewer make a judgement based on what we see whether it is through sound, visual, location or anything else, it all establishes the type of character we are seeing.

Miss Downton's Subway work

Q: Who did you chose to include in your advertising campaign and why. What was your chosen representation of these people?

A: For out advertising campaign we decided to use 3 different types of characters: the hippy, the Muslim girl and the rocker. We chose these characters because they all have bug differences with each other except one thing and that's subway, they all love subway. That's is also the reason we came up with the slogan "No matter who you are"
To represent subway as a food brand that everyone can enjoy.

Q: What decisions did you make which helped to construct this representation?

A: We decided that we didn't want the to make it over the top, we new the types of characters we wanted but we narrowed them down and made the image simple but memorable.

Q: How do you feel your chosen representation will support subways brand image?

A: I feel that out image will support the brand image because it's a positive image showing no matter what race, colour, Social background etc ever one bonds over a subway something everyone shares in common and that's why I believe it's the best image to use for your brand.

Horror movie codes and conventions

I watch the horror/comedy spoof film
Scary movie (as I am a scaredy cat).

Codes and conventions of this film:

Sacrifice lamb/Someone killed in first 5 mins - In scary movie the girl is alone at home getting ready to watch a scary movie and then get a phone call and get murdered, this sets the mood for the rest of the movie. We also get a glimpse of either the killer or his style of killing

Accidental trip while running away from killer - this is also done in this movie on many occasions to make the audience frustrated. It also makes sure that the victim dies

The fake scare - this is done many time in this movie e.g  at the beginning after the girl locks the back door the front door bell rings. Also the part where the girl checks her window and the boy pops up
This is to make the audience jump, this may happen before the actual murder so the audience doesn't expect the killer cause they thought it was a false alarm.

Investigating an unexpected sound - this is done to build tension and makes the audience afraid because they now what's going to happen next. this is also done on several occasions.

Abandoned/secluded location -  this is done in scary movie as when they are having a flash back on what happened a year ago they get stuck in the middle of a road and there's no one around. Gives audience a sense of alertness.

Character forgets about threat/ignores threat - they do this horror movies in order not only for the film to progress but also to make us as the audience feel something particular towards those characters

Victim cowers by door/ window - this is also done In scary movie. It also done so the victim can be killed and to show that the killer has no conscience or love just pure hatred.

Don't listen warning (signs) - this happens on many occasions. This  happens so that the audience feel over the edge.

Character being alone - usually the lest important characters die first so when they are alone we automatically as the audience know is going to happen next.

Lighting - in scary movie and in most other horror film the use of lighting is crucial, the lighting is usually dark and can't see much so it's mostly black.

Victims relating deaths to what they did - this is done in scary movie, the victim talks about how it's weird that a murder has happened exactly one year after they killed someone. This make the audience question the killers reasons but Also if the victims are realign victims

Phone line cut - this happens In many horror movies but not so much in scary movie, except the killer calls the person to tell them he knows what they done and hangs up

Running upstairs instead of outside -  this is done in scary movie when killer tries to murder one of the main characters. This is done to create tension but also to give character no way to escape.

HW Week 3

Part 1

Match on action:

Match on action is the technique that cuts from one shot to another view that is the same as the other.
the shot may have been taken at different times but it gives the impression that its that exact moment somewhere else. this technique creates the sense of continuity, "visual bridge" which distract the viewer away from the problem.

180 Degree rule :

180 degree rule is a guideline that actors in a scene should have the same left and right relationship
to each other. 180 degree is mostly used to convey a conversation between two people.

How the director engages with the audience in the narrative and characters of the film

Amelie :

The director in engages with the audience in the narrative by showing things which bring laughter e.g. The description of the exact time When the fly sat down on the street and got squished this is unnecessary and doesn't need to be known but grabs the audience's attention

Also engages with the audience by the visual (The picture) It was the middle/end of the sequence with the little girl Amelie
Is doing the type of things a little girl her age would do to keep themselves entertained. This also shows isolation because she's playing alone.

The soundtrack is another reason as it Sounds funny and very French and with the fast French narration it even funnier. But when the sequence shows her playing on her own it sounds sad and slow.

The director Engages with the audience in the characters by showing this little girl playing on her own and through the expressions and actions E.g.  The part when the narration explains why the man is a a erasing a contact - It's very funny and Realistic because either we have or will Have to do a erase a contact because the person is dead or gone Also the narrator is another reason why we engage with the characters because he is explaining everything.

The godfather :

The director engages With the audience in the narrative by having the voice of the character on before the picture is Shown This grabs the attention of the audience because we think we are being spoken directly to (non - diegtec/narration) But actually it is diegtec Because the characters are speaking to each other.

The positioning of the godfather also engages The audience because it says he is the main or head person.
Also in the action of the waving of the hand to get the man a drink show he has power and wealth.

The director engages with the audience by the characters with the lighting e.g. When the scene starts from back to on the Man's face when one light shining directly on him ( to make him the focus point but also to set the mood) that it is dark and sinister.

The soundtrack also engages the audience because it sounds lonely, dark and sinister which makes you relate it to the godfather.

Children Of Men Analysis

Children Of Men is based on the future where people can no longer reproduce.
from the clip we saw, we only saw 3 cuts, the camera mostly followed the main character (Clive Owen)  instead of cutting constantly, the camera did a 180 degree on character while he was putting alcohol in his cup. in the clip we saw there were only a few type of shots, MLS, LS and MS. when we saw the town we saw that there were Tv's on the building and moving adverts on buses - this proves that this film based on the future because we do not have such thing yet. we also saw the town was very polluted and looked slightly dark, this symbolises that times have changed, also the sky was not blue but more yellow which could suggest that not ono is there a lot of pollution and pollution has become a big problem but nothing is being done about. in terms of design everyone seemed to be in work clothing and the streets were very busy, which could suggest the population of people that remain still have to work.

Diegtec sound:
there was diegtec sound such as the news report having sad music behind the story to mark the last young persons death. also the sound of cars and people crying at the report were there.
also the reported sounded slightly emotional when reading the report

Sound FX:
there were some sound fx used such as the bomb going off and the buses and cars driving past

Design:
the design of the street is set out to show that we are in 2027 because there is televisions on building and the streets are busy and the colour of the sky is different.

Three colour blue essay

Three colours blue's opening sequence begins with the sound of an accelerating car, going in and out of tunnels; At first we do not see the car or the car’s wheel but by the sound we understand that it is a car driving down a motorway of some sort, this makes the viewer tense as they don't know what to expect because the car is accelerating so there is a feeling thatsomething bad might happen. In terms of picture we only see the car wheel moving whilst in drive. We then hear a horn which makes the viewer alert (it grabs itsattention), this is because so far we have only heard the car in drive and when we hear the horn we expect something to happen even though nothing has changedin the picture. The movie then follows to ablue chocolate wrapper being waved around by what looks like a child's hand and we know it is a wrapper not only by the way it looks but by the scrunching sound of the wind hitting the wrapper. The colour of the wrapper could be related to the name of the movie .We know that waving a chocolate wrapper on the wind is the doing of a child as only a child would do such things if they were bored. When we go into the long tunnel we see a POV shot which shows us what the child is seeing, we know it is the child's POV because; we have not been introduce toany other characters yet and before the POV shot we see a brief shot of the girl inside the car, when we see the POV shot we understand the little girl is tired; as the sound is slightly distorted as if the person is falling asleep and also the view isbecomes blurry. The next thing we see is the car has stopped so that the little girl can have a break out of the car to urinate; it is here we assume we see the father as a man from behind the wheel gets out of the car and stretches. The next shot is the dripping of the breaks and hear the mother (but we don't see her) call for her daughter.  Whilst the dripping is stillhappening we see the daughter running back this could mean that there could be an accident and the little girl who has been the focus up till now might die. Then we hear from afar a car beeping; we as the viewer assume that it is the same car as before and because we have seen the breaks drip we start to guess what is going to happen next; also there is a fog and thiscan contribute to the car crash as they wouldn't be able to see anything properly. When the car passes and hits the tree we do by see as we already guessed what has happened,  all we know is that the car has crashed into something as we hear a big smash. Then when we are shown the car we see that the guesses of a crash came to happen.

Three Colour Blue Questions

Q:Which shot do you think is most powerful in the telling of the story?
A: I think the most powerful shot is the leaking of the brakes as it shows us what the future holds and what is going to happen (we know before they do) so this makes us as the tense.

Q: Which shots establish who the characters are?
A: The shots that established the characters are the medium close-up/close-up of the child at the back of the car. The medium shot of who we assume is the father stretching. We don't really see the mother but we hear her call her daughter when she goes to Urinate.

Q: What is the name of the little girl?
A: Dianna

Q: Do we see the mother?
A: No but we hear her voice when she calls out for her daughter

Q: Is sound more powerful than picture or the other way around?
A: I believe both are important but sound is what makes the picture powerful as Listening without the picture you wonder what has happened e.g when we heard a car horn we thought something had happened.
It gives the picture a whole new level
